It is never too late to Challenge!!

~Many beginners in the Adult Basic Judo Class in the USA~

The Labor Day weekend if over and I started smelling Autumn in the City of Chicago.  We started our Adult Fundamental Class with participants ranging from 20 to 70 years old.  Although it was during the day on a weekday, we had 15 students participate.  I joined as the instructor and had a great time.

This class is held on Mondays 11:30~13:30, 20:00~22:00, Wednesdays 11:30~13:30, and on Thursdays 20:30~22:00.  4 classes a week and people who love Judo are spontaneously participating.  Especially Thursday nights are crowded with “after work” participants where in cases the number goes up to 40!!

Different than the kids class, this is something.

What surprised me most is that if one shows interest, regardless of age, you just start it.  Judo athletes would understand me, but in Japan no one starts Judo after becoming an adult.  But here in the US, there are people that pick this new sport after turning 70, or an elite businessman in his 50’s that wants to conquer all martial arts.  What is common is the understanding of “there is no age limit to start your challenge” thus the title.  I just hope that this spirit can be brought into Japan.

I on the other hand had to cover my language barrier with body language, gestures, and a big smile on my face.  The students help me get through this.

[Curriculum of the Adult Fundamental Class]

  1. Warm Up Session: 30 min
Brian, a professional fitness instructor, takes the lead for this true warm-up. Fun but tough – students get to enjoy judo and fitness in one class – yes kill two birds with one stone!!
  2. Footwork Session: 30 min
We train the movement of your feet to understand the proper usage from “ASHI WAZA” to “SEOI NAGE” Different than kids, these people have an objective so everyone is VERY SERIOUS.
  3. Technical Session 40 min
Today is KOUCHI GARI. Even with my poor English, everyone tried hard to understand me – I really want to put my best out for these great people. Gotta study English!!
  4. Free Technic Session (RANDORI – 30 min)
When they practice with each other, they have fun. But when they practice with me, they want to try themselves out and would come full force!! Although they’re beginners, adult men in US are tall and very powerful – I need to put my best in too. lol

But I truly love this class. Putting your best in to learn something new as an adult is inspiring. I learn from them too. The challenging spirit is always beautiful.

A picture of our Footwork Session. Teaching in center of many adults with more experience of life than me is very rare in Japan. This makes me nervous…
Teaching Uchimata – don’t think people can raise their legs as high as me… But everyone is serious.
In Japan I would never practice with a 6ft 200 lb man. Arm strength is enormous. If he’s serious, then I need to be too.
The difference in arm strength, I overcome with technique. I use my best move – using NEWAZA to strangle him down. Yes, this one is a setup.
These wild creatures are all students!! But the smiles of everyone after practice is the same whether you’re an adult or a kid. It’s sparkling!! Good Job Everyone!!
